[Food review] 王老五 Wang Lao Wu Chicken King

Chicken rice lovers will not want to miss this cafeteria, Wang Lao Wu Chicken King.

Hainanese Chicken rice is their signature dish.

Very well-steamed, the tenderness of the chicken meat seems almost perfect.

Given steamed chicken and roasted chicken, I pick roasted! Simply because of the slight crisp chicken skin!

The fatty layer under the skin isn’t that bad to me, infact it’s pretty easy to be removed!

What’s chicken rice without the fragrance rice right?

I personally think the rice is good enough to be eaten by itself, or with the additions of black soy sauce and chilli or chopped ginger!

At Wang Lao Wu Chicken King, it’s not just chicken rice that they serve. Their menu is pretty close to Hong Kong style roasted meat stalls, where roasted port and authentic steam boil soups are prepared and served with fresh ingredients.

I love the char siew & sao rou, especially the crispy skin! What is lacking is maybe some honey sauce for the meat to dip in?

There are quite a wide variety of steam boil soups at Wang Lao Wu Chicken King.

Bitter Gourd Soup (S$4.40), surprisingly I don’t taste any bitterness from it. The bitter gourd itself has been cooked over a period of time without becoming too soggy, carrot and red dates add some sweetness to the soup, almost covering up the bitterness from the bitter gourd.

Black Chicken Soup (S$5.50), filled to the brim of the bowl, like going to overflow anytime! Alot of chinese herbs are added in to ensure the black chicken is immersed with the savory taste from the soup.

Water Cress Soup (S$4.50), good for getting rid of  heatiness from the body. It’s not just a greeny soup. Pork ribs and red dates are added in.

Local delights are the extended menu from Wang Lao Wu Chicken King. Most Singaporeans don’t just eat chicken rice alone, some will prefer to add in some side dishes, and that’s when side dish like Thai Fried Beancurd comes in.

I dig the overdosed chopped peanuts!

They also serve value set meals at very affordable prices.

The one where I tried is at Kallang Leisure Park #B1-22.

[Food Tasting Session] BIG Feast at Nando’s @ 112 Katong!

After the Bloggers Tour at 112 Katong, I joined everyone for a big feast at Nando’s!

I love the cosiness inside the restaurant. It sure gives me the comfort of loud chatting and be my own trueself. However, depends on where the seat is, the seat where I had taken, the blasting aircon above the ceiling made me feel cold at times.

Nando’s serves very fresh and tasty chicken, with secret recipe spicy sauces, Peri-Peri (comes with different different spicy level!) to serve with the meat.

Nando’s Peri-Peri sauce comes with a story!

The moment we sat down, we were served with a range of specially concocted drinks (alcoholic and non alcoholic).

Checking out the menu… *shock*

There are a wide variety of food to cater to everyone!

That’s not all! Every meal completes with desserts!

Here are what we were treated!

Starting with appetizer!

Salad to freshen up our taste buds!

Side dish like wedges is a must-try!

Main course was 4 different flavoured delicious chicken meat!

The chicken meat was very tender and it was very well-cooked. There’s no dryness in the meat, gravy on the chicken skin is yum yum! YES! I ate the skin! LOL

I was given a voting card to vote for my favourite taste!

My vote goes to… Lemon Herb! Voting ends end of this month, 31st January 2012. If you are visiting 112 Katong, you should bring your loved ones to Nando’s to try out the 4 voted flavoured chicken! Winners will be announced and prizes await!

Cute voting table at the entrance of Nando’s.

And Nando’s even has rice served anytime for diners who can’t get away with a meal without rice!

I was super full during this feast prepared by Nando’s. But nothing could stop me from trying out their desserts!

They tasted awesome!

Cheesecake! I personally feel, the cheesecake would have tasted better without the caramel. Yep, I am not a fan of caramel though I have very sweet tooth.

The next time when you are wondering where to gather friends for a meal and hours of talk, think of Nando’s! =)

[Food Tasting Session] Authentic Thai Gourmet at Ah Loy Thai

When I talk about Thai food, my tongue starts to “itch”. LOL.

“Itch” as in, it is craving for hot and spicy, sweet and sour food, and my saliva begins to drool~

There are quite a number of Thai restaurants in SG but when comes to authentic Thai cuisine, I must recommend everyone Ah Loy Thai.

I was brought to Ah Loy Thai a year ago. Back then, it was quite a small restaurant, many times, customers would have to queue and wait.

On my 2nd trip to Ah Loy Thai sometime ago, the restaurant has expanded. Ah Loy Thai took over the adjacent unit, which has more tables catering to big groups. Gosh, the new place was spacious!

*pardon the blur photo, must be I was too hungry, no strength to hold the camera*

I must say, dining in groups at Ah Loy, is like having a King and Queen, Princes and Princesses BIG feast! Imagine a long table full of meat, fishes, different green food, appetizers, side dishes and the list goes on.

In a Thai cuisine, there are two drinks which are like a must-order drink:
Left: Homemade Thai Lemon Grass ($2.30)
Right: Traditional Thai Milk Red Tea ($2)

There were ALOT of dishes for us to pick!

Together with other bloggers and Elfaine, founder of The Sample Store, our feast started off with the highly popular Papaya Salad.

Papaya Salad ($5.30), my all-time favourite appetizer in Thai cuisine. Love its super spiciness from the chilli padi!

Ah Loy Thai Fried Butter Calamari ($7) is a must-try! Must eat it while it’s hot to enjoy the crispiness and juiciness. Very chewy ya!

*Pardon my blur photo again.. i think i was so eager to try the food that i didn’t hold the camera long enough to capture a sharp image*

Tom Yum Seafood ($6.90), seafood and spicy hot lovers, don’t miss this dish! Serves in claypot to maintain its hotness, be sure to satisfy your tongue’s taste bud for some fresh seafood with spicy shiok!

Thai Green Curry ($6.50) is also one of the popular dishes at Ah Loy Thai. What’s Thai food without green curry?? I dig the gravy which is thick and smell nice boneless chicken meat!

Pineapple Fried Rice ($5.90) was one of the dishes we tried. It comes with generous pieces of fresh prawns, other than that, it’s really a normal fried rice, with scrambled eggs and cubes of luncheon meat. The pineapple was very little, I hardly tasted any. The overall taste was a little bland, I’ll still prefer the pineapple rice which is yellow and served with pork floss and lotsa pineapple! =)

Tom Yum Fried Rice ($6.90), is only available from 3 to 6pm. The tom yum taste is a little bland, but i like the spiciness, save my hassle of adding balachan! =)

For pork, we had Thai Garlic Pork (($6.90), another must-try side dish! The garlic has made the pork meat so delicious that this dish was finished at one go! There isn’t alot of fatty layers above the meat, no worry about getting sick of it because it’s cooked with minimum oiliness. :)

If you like more crispy side dishes, Thai mango crispy chicken ($7.50) is a good choice. The crispiness of the chicken skin , the sweet sour juice from the mango, will make you want to eat one piece after another!

Thai Pandan Chicken ($9), one of the common dishes in Thai Cuisine. I have tried it at a few other Thai restaurants, most of the times, I had problem removing the pandan leaves using fork and spoon, always ended up with using fingers. At Ah Loy Thai, somehow, the chicken was wrapped with pandan leaves in such a manner that, just needs to pull out the folder pandan leaf with a fork, and the chicken meat can be easily scooped out. So much convenient to eat without dirtying the hands!

I believe the number one highly ordered soup in Thai cuisine is tom yum soup. But if you will like to try something different, Tom Yum Thai Style Fish Clear Soup ($6) at Ah Loy Thai is the ONE! This is a choice for those who can’t take spicy but will like to try tom yum soup. It has no additional spiciness added, just the tom yum taste alone, sour and very minimal spiciness.Other than the fresh sliced fish, there are additional seafood in the soup! Very tasty and sure to open up your appetite.

At Ah Loy Thai, there are also some fish dishes to choose from. We had two steamed fish that day.

Thai Lemon Fish ($13.50) is one of their latest dish invention. It has this light lemon taste to make the fish smells even more fresher.

Thai Lemon Grass Steam Fish ($13.50), fresh fish meat with light lemon grass fragrance.

These two big fishes really give me the shock of the day, too much to finish! :D As if the lady boss had thought we were still hungry, we were treated with 3rd fish dish!

Thai Crispy Spicy Sauce Fish ($12) comes with lotsa of chilli, i LIKE! Love its crispy skin, crunchy!

There was a Black Pepper Crispy Fish ($14.50), a new dish at Ah Loy Thai, but I didn’t have the chance to try it. Basically, it is pretty similar to the Thai Crispy Spicy Sauce Fish, just that for this one, it’s on black pepper sauce, with added tomatoes, spring onions and peeled onions.

For vegetables, we tried two dishes. Fried Kailan and Fried Sweet Potato Leaf. Both are available in spicy and non-spicy.

Fried Kailan, love its crunchiness!

Fried Sweet Potato Leaf is well fried, not soggy at all!

Another two more yummy stir-fried basil leaf dishes , yummy enough to eat with plain rice!

Stir-fried RED Basil Leaf with Chicken ($5.80)

Stir-fried RED Basil Leaf with Pork ($5.80)

Other than chicken and pork, this dish is also available with seafood and beef! Yum yum!

You’ll prolly wonder what’s with the RED and WHITE in the dishes names. It’s actually referring to the sauce used for stir-frying. For the white sauce, i doubt it’s really in white, it’s probably in transparent with non-spiciness. :)

Other than ordering the usual glass noodle in Thai Cuisine, you may want to check out the Thai Fried Kway Teow (Phad Thai) ($5.90) at Ah Loy Thai. The portion maybe a little too much if you are ordering alot of side dishes, so do prepare to order it and share with others ya! Do eat it while it’s hot, it tends to turn soggy and less tasty when turns cold.

Order taking at Ah Loy is done using this order chit. Quite a wide variety of Thai dishes to choose from!

Next time when you want to have a feast with authentic Thai cuisine, don’t forget Ah Loy Thai!

[Food Tasting Session] Tom’s Palette Ice Cream Making Workshop & Oversea Restaurant

Here’s a blog post on two food tasting sessions which I had with the bloggers invited by The Sample Store! The two food tasting sessions included trying out the homemade ice cream from Tom’s Palette and a Chinese cuisine at Oversea Restaurant!

———————————————————–
1st Food Tasting session on the same day
———————————————————–

Yep, DIY to create my own homemade ice cream!

Ice Cream DIY was nothing new to me, I already knew it can be done at home. Someone had actually DIY ice cream for me before and it tasted really as good as the ice cream bought from stores… which was why I was very excited when I was invited to this Bloggers Ice Cream Making Workshop to try it myself.

It’s my first time to make ice cream within a few hours, was feeling very nervous but with happiness, because I’m the one who would freak out when comes to cooking! I’m scared of being scalded and burnt, had bad incidents when I was young… :(

This Bloggers Ice Cream Making Workshop was held at Tom’s Palette at Shaw Leisure Gallery.

Tom Palette has been interviewed and recommended in quite abit of press media! WOW!

The clean and spacious space made me felt so comfy during the workshop!

The cute cartoons and photos really caught my attention, they totally liven up the fun ambiance during ice cream making!

Getting started…

Holicks powder and Sugar!

Full cream milk and whipping cream!

The necessary utensils and tools…

A live demo by the “chef” ( ah! I have forgotten his name! =/ ) before the hands on started!

Demo starts!

Crack open an egg. Use only the yolk and add sugar to it. Mix well!

Separate the egg yoke from the egg white. Egg yoke is what we need.

Adding 1 tablespoon of sugar to the egg yoke…

Mix well!

Add half a cup of milk into pot.

Stir well!

It’s alright to lower the temperature during stirring.

Add 3 to 4 generous tablespoons of Horlicks into milk.

Continue stirring, ensure the milk doesn’t get burnt! Uneven and long stirring will turn your milk into scrambled egg!

Combine Horlicks, milk, egg yolk and sugar. (Pour everything from the pot to the bowl of egg yoke (with sugar mixed).

After mixing and stirring, pour the mix back to the pot. Cook all these ingredients (mixture) until it becomes a thick and rich sauce.

Stir well!

Continue stirring the mixture till the texture is thick and creamy!

Add half a cup of whipping cream and stir evenly while still heating.

Last 2 steps…

Get ready the bowl and filter!

Pour the mixture from pot to a bowl with filter to filter off any residue from stirring.

After filtering, see the residue on the gauze!

Remove the filter and give the mixture final “beat” using a whisk! Let the mixture cool down for awhile before freezing it.

Freeze and churn by hand! During freezing, leave the whisk in the mixture! You’ll need it to churn the ice cream after freezing!

The output! Really tasted like Holicks!! Yeah, succeeded!

A few shots of me making my ice cream! I paired up with Jacelyn and instead of taking turns to make the ice cream, we combined our ingredients as a whole to “cook” together!

Me, before freezing the mixture!

It was a great and fun experience making ice cream, I didn’t know it could be so easy! Then again, Holicks flavour is one of the easiest ice cream to start with.

Bloggers also had a mini ice cream tasting session at Tom Palette! We had the golden opportunity to try out all the flavours at the shop!!

Must-try and highly recommended is, Salted Egg YOlk! It really has the egg yolk taste but it’s not gross or too strong at all! It’s love at first taste!

More flavours available!

All flavours are tiphilicious! I like and definitely going back some days!

Prices of the scoops can be found on the photo at the beginning of this blogpost. :)

Keen to know who’s my teacher?

Dah dah dah dah!!

Cute dude eh! He’s nice and helpful can! :D

Anyway, hope this blogpost gives you a rough guide on you can DIY your own cream at home!

Have fun!

2nd Food Tasting session on the same day
——————————————————–

After the Bloggers Ice Cream workshop,  together with Elfaine, the founder of The Sample Store, we headed to next door, Oversea Restaurant for lunch.

A Chinese restaurant with very oriental interior design.. reminds me of being at Hong Kong!

We were brought to one of their VIP rooms!

Beautiful table setting!

Oversea Restaurant has established a good reputation on their innovative recipe on quite a few dishes.

Here’s a list of their signature tasty dishes which we were given to try!

Upon seated, we were served with tea and juices. Very good service here, the waiters were knowledgeable, they knew what dish they were serving.

Open your eyes big big at the dishes names and the prices okay, you will find the prices are super reasonable and AFFORDABLE even though you are dining in a restaurant!!

Our first dish served!

(Fried Chilli Fish Paste Roll, $9.80)

Gosh, I totally dig the chilli gravy. Tasted as good as chilli crab gravy! It’s thick and not very oily, I could even just sip the gravy on its own!

Next!

(Wok Fried Wanton with Pineapple, $12.80)
Fried Wanton tasted good on its own, but the Chef at Oversea came up with its unique sweet and sour taste using Pineapple. Frying the wanton with capsicums and pineapple doesn’t spoil the crispiness of the wanton, and infact, it brought out additional taste when pairing up with wanton. Bye bye to eating wanton on its own!

Third dish!

(Braised Egg Plant with diced Prawn, $9.80)

Frankly speaking, I wasn’t a fan of egg plant, kind of disgusted by its slimy texture. Surprisingly, this dish didn’t irk me at all. It had a special taste which got me craving for a 2nd piece! Well-cooked with a perfect softness inside! Or maybe it’s because we were sharing, one piece of egg plant couldn’t kill me. =/ I think the elderly in the family is going to like it, healthy, tasty, soft and fresh!

(Wok Fried Crispy Sliced Pork with Bitter gourd, $9.80)

My goodness! This bitter gourd dish was good! The bitter taste wasn’t strong and infact, I quite liked its semi crunchiness!

(Stir Fried String Bean with Minced Meat, $12.80)

Crunchy is the best word to describe this dish! Very similar taste to another common Chinese dish, “Si Ji Dou”, just that they are of slightly different bean. The minced meat was delicious and for all the bah chor (minced meat) lovers like me who tend to have it with plain rice, the feeling was shiok!

(Deep Fried Carp Fish, $12.80)

One of the ‘must-try’ healthy dishes at Oversea! The skin of the fish was very crispy and the fish meat was fresh and tasty! The fish was wiped off within minutes!

(Steamed Chicken with Salted Fish, $12.80)

This chicken dish tasted averaged for me. But the chicken meat was tender and nice to chew, and together with the sliced garnishes, the overall taste was still not too bad.

(Crispy Fish Fillet with Lemon Grass Top and grapefruit, $12.80)

Here’s another fresh fish meat we had. It can sure open up everyone’s appetite because of its sweet and sour taste. A little similar to those thai-styled fish from Thai restaurants, but the fish paste was specially concocted by the Chef at Oversea Restaurant.

(Yong Tau Foo, $10.80)

In Cantonese cuisine, there is always a soup, whether if it’s steamed, boiled, stewed or inclaypot, Cantonese just loves soup. Yong Tau Foo soup may sound pretty simple to us, but when I took the first sip of this soup, gosh! The soup was thick and tastefully sweet! Very appetizing!

(Sweet Potato / Beancurd Skin, $9.80)

I bet this dish was hot favourite too! The beancurd skin was uber crispy and the sweet potato had got this sweetness which got me wanted for more! Eat it while it’s still hot in the claypot, take the gravy with plain rice, yummy!

(Claypot with Potato and Egg, $9.80)

Tomatoes with egg, another healthy dish!

(Braised Beancurd with meatball in clay pot, $12.80)

Loved the light crispyness of the beancurd. Inside was soft, outer layer was slight crispy.

Additional 2 complimentary signature dishes! Thanks to the generosity from Oversea!

(Special BBQ Char Siew, price unknown, but I believed it’s about SGD12 for the portion I had in my photo below.)

Must order in advance okay! Highly demand everyday! When I tried my first piece, I went SPEECHLESS! This special BBQ char siew has got its unique char siew gravy which is thick and sweet. The BBQ heat and tenderness of the char siew was terrific, PERFECT! There wasn’t alot of fatty meat, and even if there was, I think it’s not going to be a bother because my tongue was on full focus on the chew and taste! Once piece was not enough! I had the urged to finish up the whole plate if it’s not about the sharing!!

Chilli! Even when chilli paste was given, I couldn’t care bout it, I just wanted to eat the BBQ char siew on its own, to really enjoy the original taste!

Another complimentary dish from Oversea was pork meat in claypot. here were

Extremely tender! The pork meat had been nicely stewed! Even the carrot which came along with the meat was soft! The gravy tasted salty, but good enough to pour some onto plain rice to give the rice an extra taste.

Ending our lunch with…

(Sesame Dumpling, price unknown)

Sesame fillings, sounds normal but looking at dumplings closely, there was some glittering on the starchy skin. Those glittering were actually sugar bits. Very innovative right,

Finally check out the bill! It’s not too expensive considering that we had 13 dishes plus 2 complimentary dishes and everyone had drinks!

Some of the rest of the signature dishes which you may want to try at Oversea:

So next time if you want to have a small meal with your family, you may want to try Oversea!

Food Tasting Event: Creation Cafe

Last weekend, I had joined 8 other bloggers for a food tasting session at Creation Cafe.

Creation Cafe is a pasta restaurant which serves pretty good pasta in my own opinion. Creation Cafe has quite a wide variety of sauces to go along with the pasta.

I was told that the pasta which Creation Cafe serves are award-winning pasta! *wow*

Checking out the cute and simple menu:

Other than the yummy pasta, we were served with soup and drinks to go along with the 5 main courses.

What we had were basically the lunch sets which were priced at $9.90 and slightly more than $9.90 for some sets, depending on the sauces the customers choose.

During this food tasting session, we were treated with yummy pasta from their top 5 sauces, Seafood Carbonara, Spicy Crab Meat, Java Curry Sauce, Laksa Cream Sauce, Mushroom Risotto.

Carbonara pasta was my all-time favourite, with ham, sausage and mushroom shredded into the pasta. Pasta cream lovers must try this!

For seafood spicy crabmeat, there will be an additional charge of $4.00. A claw and a leg of the crab were included!

Seafood Java Curry Sauce, an additional charge of $1.00. I find the curry taste not bad but too much of it can get a bit sick of the taste. Or maybe because that was my 3rd pasta dish and i was like half full?

Seafood Laksa Sauce, additional $1.00. The Laksa Sauce was good, took me awhile to really get used to the combination “pasta + laksa”.

It’s my first time to try Risotto, I must say it is very filling with the rice which is as big as those Japanese Pearl Rice. It has a mixture taste of mushroom and vegetables.

I will suggest come in groups, so that everyone get to try the different pasta sauce.
